Sebastian Wins Liukin Invitational

Dec. 13, 2008 - A week after signing with the University of Michigan, BCGA gymnast Rohan Sebastian won the all-around and three event titles at the Valeri Liukin International Invitational in Frisco, Texas.

In the Level 10 16-18 division, Sebastian won the all-around title by more than three points over the runner-up.

Sebastian won gold medals on pommel horse, still rings, vault and high bar. He placed fourth on floor exercise and parallel bars.

Held in honor of gymnastics legend Valeri Liukin, the annual Liukin Invitational is one of the most prestigious competitions in the country.

Sebastian's coach Ivan Ivankov won the gold medal on still rings in the elite division. Ivankov, the 1994 and 1997 world all-around champion, retired from competition in 2006 but stays in shape for exhibitions. He used the Liukin competition as a warmup for the Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular, taped Dec. 23 in South Dakota and to be televised on NBC in January.

The BCGA Level 6 boys team also met with success, placing third as a team. In the 8-9 year-old division, Max English placed seventh all-around and won the silver medal on floor exercise; and Cade Muldrow placed 28th all-around with seventh-place finishes on both vault and parallel bars. In the 10-year-old division, Alex Bates placed fourth all-around, Nicholas Bishop sixth all-around and third on vault, and Nick Cramer seventh all-around. In the 11+ division, Connor Gibson placed 10th all-around and won the silver medal on pommel horse.

Level 8 Alex Richmond placed eighth all-around and won the silver medal on high bar.
